"Precious Things" -- Creating Lyon and Blair

Well, well... Anyone who does follow my silly little random blog is going to meet two new characters who are in the infancy of their development: Lyon White and Blair Freeman. (Would she be Freeman b/c of Clay, or would she keep her natural last name, Frankford?) I may also get a little into Tabitha "Tabby" White and her LI, Mathew "Matt" Belvari. As always, names and details are prone to change by the time these stories officially release.

First up, Lyon and Blair:

This is a present day image of the two characters. They've definitely mellowed their appearances from when they first met, though that doesn't mean *all* their tastes have changed. ;)

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photography-young-punk-woman-image4316417

This is how Blair looked when she and Lyon met two years ago. He liked her enough that he actually kept her on tour with The Jungle Kings for the entire summer / fall / something of a year. Blair's siblings, Clay and Julia, weren't too keen on this, and Lyon's sister Tabby wasn't totally convinced that having Blair around was as much of a muse for Lyon as he claimed her to be. (Tabby got jealous of the attention her brother having a serious GF did to their relationship, even though Blair tried to be nice.)

Eventually Tabby succeeds in splitting them up by making it look like Lyon cheated on Blair (did he?), causing her to leave and their relationship to be over. After this, she returned to Alberta, met her boyfriend (the abusive jerk mentioned in "The Mansion You Stole" and moves to Maple Springs with Clay and Megan by the end of the book. That's where we find her at the beginning of this story.

Lyon White, lead guitarist of The Jungle Kings, may seem to have it totally together on stage. But the moment the music's over he is trapped firmly in the shadow of his twin sister, Tabby. Meeting Blair changes everything: with her, he doesn't just sometimes "matter". With Blair, Lyon actually feels like the sort of person he wants to be. But anything that *is* for Lyon is bound to take away from Tabby, so it's not long before his scheming twin is trying to find a way to get things back to the status quo.

After a drunken screw up where Blair leaves him after catching him with another girl, Lyon drifts aimlessly, producing the sound Tabby and the rest of his bandmates expect, but not really feeling much of anything.

Hey there you just standin' in your kitchen,
Bobble head bobbin' while hubby stands there bitchin',
Don't tell me you think you're queen of this house,
No, you fool, you're just a mouse.

Potential New Computer Design

Okay, let's set the record straight. I can be a bit like Darth Vader--fuck with me and you are gone. That's how I'm feeling about my PC right now. (YAY!) so it may be time to start researching the specs for a new one. For shits and giggles, I'm gonna link up a couple new designs and we'll see how they stack up. Why not? Beaster is 2.5 years old and I'm shocked I wasn't ready to replace it anyway.

CASE: ($60) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=6_112&item_id=048658

It has 2 USB ports on the front (one 2.0; one 3.0), front headphones (get 'em to work this time, people!), 7 expansion slots (important, if memory serves?) and 4 things for DVD players, etc.) Plus it's gorgeous red & black w/ a scorpion on it.

GRAPHICS CARD: ($200) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_558&item_id=053225

Same power level as my current graphics card, only two generations "newer"; meaning, it will LAST.

PROCESSOR: ($110) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64&item_id=053270

Same number of cores, but a much faster speed (3.8 vs. 3.2) and compatable with modern motherboards (F2 as opposed to AM3)

MOTHERBOARD: ($100) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_1156&item_id=053260

Same company as last one; 2 USB 3, 4 USB 2.0; lots of SATA crap, etc,; 2x PCI Express x16. **Make Sure This Can Have USB Ports In Front.**

RAM: ($70) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_311_312_612&item_id=035787

8gb @ 1600 CL8? Not bad. I don't think I *need* 16?? (Would need to check if MB could handle it?) Used G-Skill RAM in current PC and performance has been good.

HARD DRIVE ($95): http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_210_212&item_id=029337

Same brand has on current pc; twice as big, good speed capacity; they don't sell the little ones anymore, lol.

POWER SUPPLY: ($50) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_442&item_id=051202

Same brand as last one, pretty sure we went w/ 600 and this one's 625; check with builders to make sure it won't make the graphics card explode.

BLU RAY PLAYER: ($70) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_54&item_id=054293

Why not? Time I had one of these in my PC so I don't have to turn my PS3 on every time I want to use it.

DVD DRIVE: ($20) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_61&item_id=029356

Same one that's in my current pc; convenient for normal shit. Why not, it's $20? *shrug*

HARDWARE TOTAL PRE-TAXES: $790.00 (No sales required; prices standard)

SOFTWARE:

Windows 7 Home Premium OEM -- $105 (DO NOT LOSE THIS TIME!!!! >:O ) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=530&item_id=037803

Microsoft Home Office 2010: ($119 x3 lisences) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=528&item_id=037356 or 2013 ($130 x1 lisense) http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=528&item_id=056917

Compare and research these. You want what's best for formatting your BOOKS. You WRITE in Scrivener, remember. ;)

***

As you can see, replacement would NOT be impossible; it would only take time. Make sure to research more in depth if this becomes serious. And, btw, this is NOT a substitute for a laptop. What has happened here can NOT happen again. You should also look into cloud storage for further protection.

BREAKING NEWS: The Gaming Industry Lives!

For months I've been under the assumption that the gaming industry that I had grown to know and love was, for all intents and purposes, dead and buried in the ground. The de-RPG-afying of Final Fantasy. The rise of peripheral gaming systems like Kinect, PlayStation Move and the Nintendo Wii, which I am physically unable to use. The increased need to have all games come with some type of code that discourages or outright prohibits the resale of games one no longer wishes to have in their collection.

Things were looking very grim indeed.

But then, on a whim while debating possible things I could get with my Christmas money, I decided to check out IGN's Holiday Buyers' Guide. Newsflash: The Nintendo 3DS has finally matured enough in its life circle for Kat to want to buy it.

What the heck am I talking about?

Every game system, or "generation", has a life cycle. These tend to last five to seven years. And different consoles mature at different points during that cycle. (Hell, some never reach this point, or reach it way too late. *Yeah, I'm looking at you PSP!*) What determines this console "maturity" theory, at least for me?

1. Hardware is at a stage where I want to buy it.

2. There is enough software readily available that interests me that I can confidently say that the machine won't be collecting dust.

3. There are enough upcoming games for the console that I won't regret my purchase a year from now.

The Nintendo 3DS has successfully met all three of these requirements. It's time to begin carefully researching a purchase. Read on and I'll share with you why I feel so strongly about wanting this console.

1. The Hardware Is Ready To Work With Me

When the 3DS was announced, I was totally excited to see what the new technology would bring. Unfortunately, at the head of the pack of new changes was the fact that the 3DS had a naturally smaller screen then the original DS, and definitely a smaller screen then my lovely plum DSI XI.

Since I mainly play RPG, Strategy and Puzzle games, being able to see--and in turn make decisions--is vital. Even if the original model of the 3DS had released with six freaking awesome RPGs, my vision issues wouldn't have let me touch it.

Thankfully, with its larger screen, the 3DS XL makes this issue go away. Alas, however, it does not come in the absolutely jaw dropping shade of amethyst purple that was released for the regular 3DS a while ago, and is not likely to be the 3DS model bundled with a new game. Pity.

2: The Games Are Ready To Go!

"But Kat," you're likely saying, "The 3DS XL has been out for months. Why do you want it now?"

In two words? Game selection.

In the past year it seems that the number of games that would interest me on the 3DS has pretty much exploded. I won't buy a new console unless I want it's specific software, and until this round of research the 3DS simply didn't have enough to draw me in. That's definitely not the case now. Here's a quick glimpse of what has my interest, and this doesn't even begin to take into account the fact that the system plays regular DS games and that there are some awesome looking puzzle games (love!) on the eShop.

What For and Why?

Pokemon Conquest: The IGN review says "Fire Emblem meets Pikachu." I'm sold.

Harvest Moon: A New Beginning: Suppose to be good for someone--gasp!--beginning the series. Plus, it is suppose to add a bunch of awesome new features. I figure it'll tide me over until Animal Crossing. Plus--wait for it!--you get to customize your character and the youtube video I looked at was pretty solid.

Mario Kart 7: Looks like a great kart racer and, according to IGN, has the best online integration seen in any Nintendo game ever.

Kingdom Hearts 3DS: Is suppose to be the game that is leading up to the next *actual* kingdom hearts. I like the series, so that alone sells me on it.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: FF meets Guitar Hero. Three words here: Oh. My. God.

Kirby Mass Attack: Another stylus based Kirby game? Yes, please. I loved Canvas Curse.

Paper Mario Sticker Star: C'mon, it's Paper Mario. Do I need any more reason then that?

LoZ: Orcarina of Time: Yes, I probably botched the spelling. No, I never played the original. (I hated the N64 controller). Something I should probably correct.

Tales of the Abyss: It's a Tales game. I haven't played it. 'Nuff said.

Mario 3D Land: Been a long time since I played a Mario game. What the hell...Why not?

Pokemon Black: I *think* this is the right one, but it might be white I need? Either way... PokeMao needs to get this so she can trade with Jay and use voice chat on her new system.

3. Looking Toward The Future:

Having good games now isn't enough. For me to decide to purchase a gaming system, there has to be stuff that will be releasing that I am going to be excited to play. Fortunately, the 3DS has me covered and looks ready to have a totally stellar--and Kat Proof--2013 line up. Obviously I don't know everything releasing next year, but I've seen enough key goodies to know that if I buy this, I'll have some great new games to look forward to.

I'm not going to look up images for these, but here's a quick and lazy list:

-- Fire Emblem: Awakening
-- Ace Attorney 5 (more your thing then mine, but still...)
-- Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
-- Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney
-- Animal Crossing: A New Leaf
-- Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

These are just a quick glance. With an already strong lineup, participating in the evolution of a new console, discovering the games as they arrive, can be equally rewarding.

So, by this point it's probably pretty obvious that I want a Nintendo 3DS. The only decision left to be made is: red or blue?

So, have I lost my mind or potentially found gaming's salvation? Your thoughts are welcome.

Samples For Renee

Hey there!

Here are a few of the design elements from my current blog, and what I think we need to do with them for the new design:

This is a rater. Raters are used to tell those who read one of my reviews what I thought of a book on a scale of 1 - 5. On my raters, I also tend to include what a specific rating means to me. The composition of a rater goes: borders, heading, rating explanation and rating symbol *hearts, for I Write, I Read, I Review.*.

Grab button: This goes on the right sidebar of a blog and has code beneath it that another blogger can use if they'd like to add your button to their blog list. I don't know why this one doesn't have my title; must've been the in-progress version.

For the new one, I want to use the part of the header where Sarena is under the tree. I want to have I Write, I Read, I Review going down the trunk and www.katreads.com going along the bottom. It would look something like this:

This is a sidebar button, used to organize the various sections of the blog. These would likely be done in something that correlates to the background pattern we send up using.

I hope that this is helpful. :)

Realms of Ellithica Series Cover Designs and Descriptions...

This is the new fantasy fairy tale series that I am planning. Here are rough mark ups of the covers and descriptions of what each book is about :) More details to come... (Yes, I write to myself.)

The Plot:
Seventeen years ago, the queen of Unnamed Country gave birth to twins. Not wanting their children to fight, the king and queen decided one would be raised as a princess and one would be raised as a knight. Now, the time has finally come for both of them to know the truth...

Princess is unhappy because her parents are determined to have her get married. She does not like all the suitors who are storming the palace, each thinking they will win her hand -- and "more importantly" the crown.

The Knight tells Princess a story about a mysterious Prince who is trapped inside an enchanted tower in the middle of the Great Desert. Princess thinks someone like him might be just the solution she needs. After all, if he's silly enough to be locked in a tower, he won't be trying to tell her how to run her kingdom. She and Knight decide to switch places.

There are only two "little" problems: (1) Princess has never been outside the palace on her own and knows nothing about surviving in the outside world, let alone surviving a journey across the desert. (2) The Prince in question turns out to be a Naga -- a being who can shift between being a man and a snake. Princess is terrified of anything that goes "hiss".

Will Princess survive her journey, even want to win the Prince and make it back to the palace in one piece? And with Knight pretending to be Princess, and having to deal with pushy obnoxious suitors who won't take "no" for an answer, will Princess still BE a princess when she gets there?

The Plot:
Knight is glad to be done pretending to be a princess. She is happy her sister has made it back to the palace safely and even likes her new fiance, Prince Naga. But meeting her sister and experiencing the luxuries of palace life as a princess, rather then a protector, has made Knight wonder: why did her parents choose Princess and send her away to be trained? What's wrong with her?

Her time to question such things is short. Princess goes missing and a secret message is sent to Knight by the leader of the Naga Undercity, telling her that he is willing to exchange Princess if she (Knight) will take her place. Princess's Fiance warns that doing this would be dangerous, but Knight decides it is the right thing to do since (1) she is a knight and protecting the royal family is her duty, and (2) Princess has people who care about her and it won't matter if Knight disappears anyway.

What Knight doesn't know is that Naga Leader thought he was taking her when he kidnapped Princess, and that he is the handsome suitor Knight wished she could have for herself when she was taking Princess's place during her journey. Now Knight must work within the Naga Undercity to help bring about peace between the Naga and her kingdom and thwart a plot that would see Princess and Naga Prince assassinated. She just needs to figure out whether Naga Leader will help her, or whether he's the one pulling all the strings.

The Plot:

Goodie, Princess of the Evil Shadow Kingdom, has been rescuing and freeing slaves with the Secret Organization for two years now. Finally old enough to get married and take her rightful place as queen, she meets the man her father intends to marry her to -- and promptly decides to run away. But though Goodie is smart, escaping the Shadow Kingdom and seeking protection from the Elves of Wizard City will be a long and dangerous journey. So Goodie decides she needs a bodyguard.
Unfortunately, anyone who hears what the job will entail, from her loyalist Knights right down to the most brutal of cut throats, makes as hasty a getaway as they can. No one wants to mess with the Shadow King. Deciding to do one last rescue sweep of the Auction District ("I'm no coward...") Goodie stops a merchant from beating a new slave the only way she can -- by buying him.
When they leave town and have put a few miles between them and it, Goodie takes off the slave's collar and tells him she will make him a deal. If he will escort her to Wizard City, she will see that he is returned to his home and he will be free to go. But the Slave has plans of his own. He decides to put the collar on Goodie and have her serve him for a while. Unfortunately, the magic of the collar is much to potent for Goodie's much smaller body and it chokes and brands her, leaving a violent scar.
The Slave, who is actually son to the chief of the Salari tribe, out in the Great Desert, is horrified at what has happened. He knows he has to see Goodie safely to Wizard City now, as the Elven Wizards are the only ones who might know how to heal the injury the collar has left. But with her weakened and branded, assassins from the Shadow Kingdom on their trail, and him feeling more and more like he'd like to keep Goodie permanently, getting to Wizard City is looking more complicated by the minute.

The Plot:
Bookie is a half elf who, because of her heritage, has never been able to receive proper training to hone her magic. She lives in Little Village by the Mountain, where the people have come to see the two mages who live above them as their masters. Elves who live outside Wizard City tend to do so in small groups, and generally don't like other Elves near their homes, but Little Village has many poor children, and Bookie uses the skills she does have to provide for them.

Once a year, the people of Little Village send a child to the top of the mountain to serve the mages. Generally, these children never return. This year the Mayor's daughter is selected and the wealthy citizens of Little Village are outraged. They decide that they will banish one of the poor children instead. Bookie disagrees with this and offers to take her place, but the villagers claim the girl is an outcast that they will no longer shelter.

Knowing the girl might die if she travels up the mountain alone, Bookie leaves another of the children in charge and gives them all of her things, figuring she is not going to make it back down. (If there's anything Elves hate less then unwanted Elven guests, it's half-elves near their homes.0 When Bookie and her friend get to the mages' home they find a brother and sister living there who are about Bookie's age. They decide they will take in Bookie and the girl as servants.

When Bookie discovers the mages' library and is assigned to clean and re-organize it she begins to practice spells in the books when the mages are not looking. When she is eventually caught and gets into trouble, the little girl overhears her and one of the mages arguing and runs away. Bookie goes after her and they both end up getting lost and needing to be rescued. Bookie's bravery may have been a mistake, though, when creatures from the Gloom Swamp, near Shadow Kingdom, have sensed her power and want to bring her to the Shadow King.

Will Bookie stay where she is and learn magic properly from the slightly arrogant but not-as-evil-as-they-seem mage twins? Or will the lure of fame and power tempt her to lend her services to the Shadow Kingdom? The choice she makes will determine the nature of her magic, so she must choose wisely...

The Plot:
Megan has spent her life living in Village by the Sea. She has known and been friends with merfolk all her life. This changes when her mother gets sick and her father decides to listen to someone who tells him that consuming a merman's tail will make her well. Instead, Megan's parents die and their curse passes to her, since humans live such short lives in comparison to the Mer.

For four years Megan has been plagued by vicious nightmares and haunted by the ghost of a merman who once thought he loved her. She traveled to The Great Kingdom to live with her aunt, fearing the Mer might get tired of waiting for her to die and come to collect their revenge personally. But when her best friend asks her to return to the village to be with her the night she makes her change, gaining her tail for the first time, Megan cannot refuse.

Vincent has been lost ever since is twin brother died, and Megan, the one being punished for his death, is the last person Vincent expects to meet when he journeys from the Underwater Kingdom to Village by the Sea. Vincent has come to the surface for two reasons: (1) To help his cousin with her first change. and (2) to find the girl he wants for his new queen. As he gets to know Megan, though, he will have to decide whether he will toss aside tradition to be with her -- thereby freeing her from the madness of her parents' curse -- or whether he will continue to hold onto the pain and guilt he feels over his brother's death.

The Plot:
When her father suddenly dies, he never has the chance to tell his daughter, Holly, that he arranged for her to marry the younger prince of the Great Kingdom when she was still a little girl. So when Holly receives a letter just weeks after his death announcing her husband will be coming to lay claim to his kingdom, she is outraged. She sends word she has no intent to marry anyone and that he can stay right where he is.

The Great Kingdom is outraged by Holly's refusal to honor her father's agreement and decide they will take Wizard City and its so-called fountain of youth for themselves. At the orders of the Prince, he and a few men ride ahead to meet Holly and make sure this can be avoided, but she mocks him and his brother, the High King of The Great Kingdom will suffer no further insult.

As things heat up, a mysterious Knight fights for the people of Wizard City and its surrounding farmlands, protecting innocent villages, running off scavengers and opposing the Knights of The Great Kingdom when they try to do anything cruel. This Knight quickly gains note on the hate list of The Great Kingdom's champion, the Black Knight, and a heavy rivalry ensues. But when these two warriors find out who lies beneath the armor, neither one will be prepared to face the truth.

Can Holly, disguised as a Knight, find a way to save her people? Will The Great Kingdom take over Wizard City, burning its libraries and enslaving the mages? Or will two very stubborn people be able to look past their pride and save everyone?

The Plot:
The High King, ruler of The Great Kingdom, has known for a long time that a day would come when he would have to face his kingdom's greatest enemy -- the Shadow Kingdom. With Wizard City still recovering from the battle waged against them, the Shadow King has chosen now to launch his strike.

A prophecy from the Naga Undercity tells the King that the key to winning against the Shadow King is Erika, one of the mages who lives on top of the Great Mountain. Since the Great Mountain is part of his domain, the King demands that Erika must do everything in her power to ensure their victory.

Erika, who has faced the Gloom creatures of the Shadow Kingdom, knows better then pretty much anyone how terrible and dangerous this war will be. At her advice, she and the King set off on a journey to bring humans, elves, naga and mer together to defend their land.

Yet as the battle rages and victory hangs by a thread, Erika must fight a battle of a far more personal kind... Is she willing to let go of her pride and allow herself to love the stubborn human King who stands at her side, becoming more appealing with each passing day? Or will she let the fear that her Elven kin would see this as a betrayal after the attack on Wizard City hold her back?

***

Anyway, there they are. There may be more and they may not happen in that exact order. What do you think? Do I have something interesting here?
